Depression Therapy in NYC
For when you’re getting through the days but not really in them.
Depression doesn’t always mean staying in bed. For a lot of people it looks like going to work, answering emails and showing up for others while feeling flat or far away. Things you used to enjoy don’t land the way they did. You’re tired in a way sleep doesn’t touch. From the outside, nobody would know.
Because you’re still functioning, it’s easy to decide it isn’t serious enough to deal with. But feeling cut off from your own life is worth taking seriously.
Other signs people describe: pulling back from friends or a partner, a constant inner critic, irritability, trouble concentrating, or changes in sleep and appetite.
What therapy can look like
We start small and go gently. Part of the work is understanding what’s underneath the numbness, which often turns out to be feelings that had nowhere to go for a long time. Part of it is practical: small, doable steps back toward people and things that matter to you, and loosening the self-criticism that keeps you stuck. I draw on ACT, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and CBT.
If you feel this way, I want you to know that the flatness isn’t who you are, and it doesn’t have to stay. I’ve watched clients slowly find their way back to feeling more like themselves, often in small moments before they notice the bigger shift.
If you’re not sure whether it’s depression or burnout, that’s fine. They overlap a lot, and sorting it out is part of what we’d do together. If medication might help, I can help you talk it through and connect with a psychiatrist or your doctor.
If things feel urgent
If you’re having thoughts of not wanting to be here, please reach out now: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. Therapy can help alongside that support, but it isn’t an emergency service.
Reaching out
You don’t have to explain it well. I see clients in person in New York City and online across New York, New Jersey, Washington, DC and Connecticut. Start with a free 15-minute call.
